PLAN TO REPLACE COURTESY BUSING FOR $310/STUDENT?
Township Committeemen Jim Leonard and Tom Young have proposed that the township and BoE replace free "courtesy" busing of students to schools at a cost to parents of $310 per student. The proposal was included in a July 14 letter to Branchburg parents who have children affected by the end of courtesy busing. Leonard and Young hope to discuss with proposal with school administrators during the week of July 19. In the meantime, residents who have questions about the township's idea should email

SUPERINTENDENT LEAVING, NO BUDGET APPEAL PLANNED
Schools Superintendent Ken Knops announced at last night's BoE meeting that he did formally resign from the Branchburg district yesterday, and will become superintendent at the K-12 Clark School District this summer. He said he had been waiting for approval of his resignation from the county superintendent. Also, the board has decided unanimously not to appeal the township committee's recommendation for a $1.5 million cut in the school budget. Also, the BoE and teachers' union are still in talks about the proposed pay freeze and and benefits change.

BRANCHBURG SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT LEAVING?
Branchburg Schools Superintendent Ken Knops has reportedly been appointed superintendent for the K-12 Clark School District, effective July 1, but there is no official word that he has resigned from the Branchburg district. On May 21, Knops told the Branchburg News he was still working out the details of the rumored move. There will probably be more school news in the next day or two as the Branchburg teachers' union must make a decision on whether to accept a pay freeze and benefits change as recommended in the township committee's review of the failed school budget.

LARGE JET DUMPS FUEL OVER READINGTON
On Mother's Day, just before noon, a large Continental Airlines jet on its way to Japan had some mechanical trouble and headed back to Newark airport, but not before it lightened its load by dumping 170,000 pounds of fuel over Hunterdon, Somerset and Middlesex counties. The plane flew low over Solberg Airport, with its landing gear down, scaring residents and rattling windows.

THREE HOUSE FIRES IN BRANCHBURG
Branchburg -- House fires claimed one life and destroyed three homes across the township in the final days of January. Fire claimed the life of Sherry L. Cushing, 60, and gutted her home at 3372 Route 22 West, near Sol Mexican Cantina, on Jan. 20. The Bolton home at 318 Miller Ave. and River Road was completely destroyed by fire on the morning of Jan. 23 Two adults and three teenagers fled to safety after a neighbor saw the flames, called 911 and alerted the family. On Jan. 27, the home of Russell Herzog and family, 157 Brandon Court, was destroyed in a fire reported at 3:44 a.m. The family escaped safely. Herzog suffered minor burns.

Branchburg -- 58% of registered voters came to the polls. For township committee: SANFORD 3558, SARLES 3510, Cain 1913, Fois 1518. For governor: CHRISTIE 3925, Corzine 1260, Daggett 445. Statewide public question: NO 2447, Yes 1999. Other top vote getters: Assembly: BIONDI and COYLE, Freeholders: SCAGLIONE and CIATTARELLI.
Readington -- 57% of registered voters came to the polls. For township committee: AURIEMMA 4291, MUIR 4115 (both unopposed). Municipal public question: NO 2989, Yes 2420. For governor: CHRISTIE 4493, Corzine 1305, Daggett 433. Statewide public question: NO 2788, Yes 2555. Other top vote getters: State senate: DOHERTY. Assembly: DiMAIO and PETERSON. Freeholders: HOLT and SWOREN.

As of 8:35 pm, an unofficial report from the vote-counting scene at the Branchburg municipal building claims that John Sanford and Kate Sarles have been reelected to the township committee. Official results as we get them.

HOMES SOLD IN BRANCHBURG!
Had a note wondering why the real estate list "What They Went For" wasn't in the Oct. issue of the Branchburg News. Yes, there were homes sold in Branchburg last month! The list was just "misfiled" in the last minute layout shuffle. We'll add it to the November list.

Just got word that the Branchburg Soccer Club is teaming up with the Blood Center of New Jersey and will have a blood drive on Saturday, October 3 from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM rain or shine in White Oak Park near the Snack Shack.
